Function
- component of platelet vWF receptor GP-Ib-V-IX & thrombin
- participates in the formation of platelet plugs by binding to the A1 domain of von Willebrand factor, which is already bound to the subendothelium
- becomes exposed on the surface of platelets upon activation
- forms complex with glycoprotein IX & glycoprotein V
Structure
- heterodimer composed of GP-1b alpha & GP-1b beta, disulfide linked
- GP-IX is complexed with the GP-1b heterodimer via a non covalent linkage
