Function

• catalyzes the conversion of phosphatidic acid to diacylglycerol
• in addition it hydrolyzes lysophosphatidic acid, ceramide-1-phosphate & sphingosine-1-phosphate
• the relative catalytic efficiency is lysophosphatidic acid = phosphatidic acid > ceramide-1-phosphate > sphingosine-1-phosphate
• may be involved in cell adhesion & in cell-cell interactions
• inhibited by sphingosine, Zn+2 & propanolol
• not inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide treatment

Structure

• homodimer; dimerization seems not to be involved in substrate recognition, but may confer only structural or functional stability
• N-glycosylated, contains high-mannose oligosaccharides
• belongs to the PA-phosphatase related phosphoesterase family
