• bioactive lysophospholipid that elicits diverse physiological effect on most types of cells & tissues
• lipid mediator with both intra- & extracellular functions
• mitogen & tumor promoter
• effects of S1P are mediated by a specific family of G protein-coupled sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors
• chemotractic factor for hematopoietic progenitor cells
• attracts peripheral blood CD34(+) cells in vitro
• activates p38 MAP kinase (stress-induced kinase)
