• the form of tau found in paired helical filaments
• PHF-tau is a dimer with polypeptide chains antiparallel in orientation
• the polypeptides are hyperphosphorylated & covalently linked through disulfide bonds in their microtubule binding domains
• the PHF tau oligomerized to for neuropil threads
