Function
- receptor for interleukin-15
- signal transduction involves STAT3, STAT5, STAT6, JAK2 & SYK
- isoforms 6,7,8,9 do NOT bind IL-15
- phosphorylated by activated SYK
- soluble form sIL-15R-alpha binds IL-15, thus interferes with IL-15 binding to the membrane receptor
Structure
- N & O-glycosylated
- contains 1 Sushi (CCP/SCR) domain
Compartment
- mainly found associated with the nuclear membrane
- isoforms 6,7,8,9: endoplasmic reticulum membrane, Golgi, cytoplasmic vesicle membrane
- a soluble form (sIL-15RA) arises from proteolytic shedding of the membrane-anchored receptor; cleavage involves ADAM17
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=9
Expression
- expression of different isoforms may alter or interfere with signal transduction
- isoforms 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are widely expressed
