baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein 3; inhibitor of apoptosis protein 1; HIAP-1; HIAP1; C-IAP2; TNFR2-TRAF-signaling complex protein 1; IAP homolog C; apoptosis inhibitor 2; API2; RING finger protein 49 (BIRC3, API2, IAP1, MIHC, RNF49)

Function
- apoptotic suppressor
- the N-terminal BIR domain interacts with TNF receptor associated factors 1 & 2 (TRAF1 & TRAF2) to form a heteromeric complex, which is then recruited to TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2)
- interacts with SMAC & with PRSS25; these interactions inhibit apoptotic suppressor activity
Structure
- belongs to the IAP family
- contains 3 BIR repeats
- contains 1 CARD domain
- contains 1 RING-type Zn+2 finger
Compartment
Expression
- highly expressed in fetal lung, & kidney
- in adult, expression is mainly seen in lymphoid tissues, including spleen, thymus & peripheral blood lymphocytes
Pathology
- chromosomal translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) involving BIRC3 with MALT1 is recurrent in low-grade MALT lymphoma
