Introduction
A diet that excludes all meats except fish & seafood, typically allows dairy products & eggs but is otherwise a vegetarian diet.
Benefits:
- 34% lower coronary disease mortality than non-vegetarians[1]
- among 7th Day Adventists pesco-vegetarians with the lowest risks for
- all-cause mortality
- cardiovascular disease mortality
- other-cause mortality compared to
- vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians, semi-vegetarians, & non-vegetarians
- lowers all-cause mortality[2]
- benefit greater in men
- pescovegetarian diet marginally better than vegan diet
- reduced risk of colorectal cancer (RR=0.57)[3]
- lowers risk of ischemic heart disease (RR=0.87) vs meat eaters[4]
- vegan & pesco-vegetarian diets associated with significantly higher eGFR vs with nonvegetarian diets in patients with chronic kidney disease[5]
- pescovegetarian does not increase risk of stroke[4]
