Introduction
Tradename: Choledyl. (61% anhydrous theophylline).
Indications
- reversible bronchospasm
- symptomatic treatment of asthma
- chronic bronchitis
Contraindications
- uncontrolled arrhythmias
Caution:
Dosage
- adults: 4.7 mg/kg PO TID; administer sustained release every 12 hours
- children:
- 1-9 years: 6.2 mg/kg every 6 hours
- 9-16 years: 4.7 mg/kg every 6 hours
Tabs: 100 & 200 mg.
Sustained release: 400 mg, 600 mg.
Sustained action: Choledyl SA:
Tabs: 400 & 600 mg.
Pharmacokinetics
elimination: liver
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
- insomnia, irritablity, seizures, rash, gastric irritation, tremor, allergic reaction
Drug interactions
- smoking alters metabolism
- cimetidine & possibly ranitidine
- rifampin
- phenytoin
- barbiturates
- ciprofloxacin
- erythromycin
- drug interaction(s) of theophylline with fluvoxamine
- drug interaction(s) of theophylline with macrolide
- drug interaction(s) of theophylline with fluoroquinolone
- drug interaction(s) of lithium carbonate with xanthine
