Drug interactions
- coadministration of theophylline with macrolide (erythromycin & clarithromycin) increases serum concentration of theophylline & potentiates its toxicity
- interaction of theophylline with azithromycin unclear
* macrolides seem to inhibit CYP3A4 while theophylline seems to be metabolized by CYP1A2
Management
- select antibiotics other than macrolide for patients on theophylline
