Introduction

Tradenames: Cardec-DM, Rondec-DM.

Indications

• relief of cough & symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection
• nasal congestion & rhinorrhea associated with allergies or the common cold

Contraindications

• narrow-angle glaucoma
• bladder neck obstruction
• symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
• stenosing peptic ulcer
• concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy
• coronary artery disease
• pregnancy, lactation

Caution: patients with hypertension

Dosage

• adults: 5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
• children:
  • 18 months-6 years: 2.5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
  • > 6 years: 5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
• maximum: 4 doses/day

Syrup: carbinoxamine maleate 2 mg/mL + pseudoephedrine HCl 25 mg/mL + dextromethorphan HBr 4 mg/mL (240 mL)

Adverse effects

• tachycardia
• sedation
• anticholinergic effects
• paradoxical excitement
• restlessness
