Etiology
- critical illness, especially
- risk factors
- age
- duration of mechanical ventilation
- glycemic control: hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia
- duration of delirium[3]
- duration of coma apparently not a factor[3]
- this may not be reproducible
- benzodiazepine use apparently not a factor[3]
- other studies would suggest interaction of long-term benzodiazepine use & cognitive impairment in the elderly
Epidemiology
- occurs in up to 75% of critically ill patients
