codeine/phenylephrine/promethazine (Phenergan with phenylephrine & codeine)

Introduction

Tradenames: Phenergan VC with codeine. DEA-controlled substance: class 5.

Indications

• temporary relief of coughs & upper respiratory tract symptoms associated with allergy or the common cold

Contraindications

• concurrent use of MAO inhibitors
• asthma
• peripheral vascular disease

Dosage

• adults & children > 12 years of age:
  • 5-10 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (10-20 mg of codeine/dose)
• children 6-12 years: 2.5-5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (5-10 mg of codeine/dose)
• children 2-6 years: 1.25-2.5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (2.5-5 mg of codeine/dose)

Syrup: promethazine HCl 6.25 mg, phenylephrine HCl 5 mg & codeine phosphate 10 mg/5 mL (120 mL, 240 mL)
