Introduction
Tradenames: Phenergan VC with codeine. DEA-controlled substance: class 5.
Indications
- temporary relief of coughs & upper respiratory tract symptoms associated with allergy or the common cold
Contraindications
- concurrent use of MAO inhibitors
- asthma
- peripheral vascular disease
Dosage
- adults & children > 12 years of age:
- children 6-12 years: 2.5-5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (5-10 mg of codeine/dose)
- children 2-6 years: 1.25-2.5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (2.5-5 mg of codeine/dose)
Syrup: promethazine HCl 6.25 mg, phenylephrine HCl 5 mg & codeine phosphate 10 mg/5 mL (120 mL, 240 mL)
