dexamethasone/neomycin/polymixin-B (Maxitrol, Dexasporin)

Indications

• steroid responsive inflammatory ocular conditions with risk of bacterial infection

Contraindications

pregnancy-category C

safety in lactation ?

Dosage

Ophthalmic agent:

• ointment: BID-QID
• solution: 1 drop every 1-6 hours

Ointment: (ophthalmic)

• neomycin sulfate 0.35%, polymixin B sulfate 10,000 units & dexamethasone 0.1%/ g (3.5 g)

Suspension: (ophthalmic)

• neomycin sulfate 0.35%, polymixin B sulfate 10,000 units & dexamethasone 0.1%/ mL (5 mL)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • cutaneous sensitization, pain, cataracts, development of glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure, optic nerve damage, contact dermatitis, delayed wound healing
