Indications
Reference interval

Clinical significance
- hepatitis C infection is caused by one of 6 major gentotypes of hepatitis C virus (1-6)[2]
- hepatitis C virus types 2 & 3 respond to lower doses & shorter duration of therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha than other types
- hepatitis C virus type 1b responds poorly to therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha
Methods
- direct sequencing of 5' non-coding region
- limitations in differentiating subtype 1a from 1b[2]
