Diagnostic criteria
- major manifestations
- minor manifestations
- signs/symptoms
- laboratory
- increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
- increased C-reactive protein (CRP)
- EKG: prolonged PR interval
- evidence of antecedent group A streptococcal infection
- positive throat culture or rapid streptococcal antigen test
- elevated or rising streptococcal antigen titer
Laboratory evidence of antecedent group A streptococcal infection plus 2 major manifestations or 1 major manifestation plus 2 minor manifestations indicates a high probability of rheumatic fever.
Ref[2] would suggest laboratory evidence of streptococcal infection not necessary for antibiotic prophylaxis.
