Pathology
- Mycobacterial isocitrate lyase protects MTB against interferon-mediated macrophage elimination
Laboratory
- aerobic, non-motile, acid alcohol fast, slightly curved or straight bacteria
- cell walls contain mycolic acids as do other Mycobacterium
- M tuberculosis is slow growing in culture with 4-6 weeks required for growth on Lowenstein-Jensen media
- M tuberculosis DNA testing is considerably faster
