Indications
Specimen
- sputum, tissue, urine, body fluid
- swabs not acceptable
- minimum volume: 10 mL or small piece of tissue
- container:
- sterile container with a tight-fitting cap
Notes
- detection of Mycobacterium spp. is improved by use of concentration techniques
- smears & cultures of pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid & pericardial fluid often have a low yield
- multiple cultures may improve yield Antibiotic sensitivity also performed.
