Epidemiology
HBV is infectious >= 1 month on a surface at room temperature[2]
Structure
Hepatitis B viral particle:
- HBsAg (surface antigen)
- protein surface coat
- spills into the circulation in great excess
- earliest serum marker of hepatitis B (HBV) infection
- disappears from serum after resolution of HBV infection
- anti-HBsAg antibody is protective
- HBcAg (viral core protein)
- HBeAg
- shares homology with HBcAg
- presence in serum
- correlates with infectivity
- identifies candidates for interferon treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection
- viral DNA polymerase
- viral double-stranded DNA genome
Pathology
- HBXAP facilitates transcription of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genes by the HBV pX transcription activator
- apparently highjacks cellular gamma-2-adaptin (AP1G2) during viral maturation
