Pathology
- ischemic stroke involving lenticulostriate artery resulting in infarction of the caudate nucleus
Clinical manifestations
- memory deficits
- attention deficit
- deficit in verbal fluency
- deficits in executive function
- deficits in set shifting
- lesion in the head of the caudate nucleus
- confusion
- abulia
- sudden onset of apathy
- slowness of thoughts & movements
- restlessness & agitation (occasional)
- decreased attention
- motor symptoms generally mild & transient
- result from extension to involve anterior limb of the internal capsule & putamen
