• lesions of the frontal lobe or caudate nucleus
  • tumors
  • hemorrhages
  • contusions
• hydrocephalus

Clinical manifestations

• diminished or absent ability to:
  • initiate voluntary actions
  • make decisions
• reduction in:
  • speech
  • movement
  • thought
  • emotional reactions
• severe apathy
• although patients appear unresponsive, they remain alert & aware or their environment
