N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA, Acecainide)

Introduction

N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA) is a class III antiarrhythmic agent & the major metabolite of procainamide (a class Ia antiarrhythmic).

Laboratory

• specimen
  • serum, plasma (heparin, EDTA, oxalate)
  • stable for 6 months at -20 degrees C
  • collect for trough concentration
• methods: HPLC, GLC, EIA, FPIA, FIA
• analyze in conjunction with procainamide
• interferences:
  • FPIA: heparin
  • hemolysis & lipemia interfere with all methods, but GC & HPLC

Therapeutic range: 6-30 ug/mL
