Introduction

Indications

• treatment of ovulatory failure in women attempting to become pregnant

Dosage

50 mg PO QD x 5 days (days 5-9 of menstrual cycle)

Tabs: 50 mg.

Adverse effects

• common (> 10%)
  • hot flashes, ovarian enlargement
• less common (1-10%)
  • visual changes
    • blurring, diplopia, floaters, after-images, phosphenes, photophobia
  • gastrointestinal (GI)
    • hepatotoxicity, distention, bloating, nausea/vomiting
  • headache
  • thromboembolism
  • breast enlargement (males)
  • abnormal menstrual flow
  • depression
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • insomnia, fatigue, weight gain, reversible alopecia, increased urination

• drug adverse effects of estrogens
