Introduction
The contact system is a biochemical process that triggers local activation of several proteolytic systems. It plays a role in initiation & amplification of surface-mediated inflammatory processes via:
- activation of:
- complement C1
- coagulation factor XI (intrinsic pathway of coagulation)
- coagulation factor XII (intrinsic pathway of coagulation)
- prorenin
- plasminogen
- prekallikrein
- cleavage of HMW kininogen
- release of bradykinin
