• binds to trans-activating responsive sequence (TAR) RNA element
• activates transcription initiation &/or elongation from LTR promoter

Pathology

• interaction of extracellular viral Tat protein with FLK1 seems to enhance angiogenesis in Kaposi's sarcoma lesions
• in HIV-1 infection, EP300, PCAF & GCN5L2 are recruited by the viral protein Tat; EP300, PCAF & GCN5L2 regulate Tat's transactivating activity & may help induce chromatin remodeling of proviral genes
