- binds to EGF-receptor with lower affinity than EGF
- autocrine growth factor as well as a mitogen for a broad range of target cells including astrocytes, Schwann cells & fibroblasts
- the immature precursor interacts with CNIH
Structure
- belongs to the amphiregulin family
- contains 1 EGF-like domain
- contains Cys in disulfide linkage(s) that are essential for biological activity
- may contain oligosaccharides &/or lipid moieties that are not obligatory for biological activity
Compartment
membrane
Expression
- induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)
