Function

• multifunctional epidermal matrix protein
• role in cornified cell envelope formation
• reversibly binds Ca+2
• potential substrate of transglutaminase
• some Arg are probably converted to citrullines by peptidylarginine deimidase
• phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR

Structure

• N-terminal domain with significant homology to S100-like Ca+2-binding proteins
• central domain containing a series of short tandem repeats
• two flanking segments with low homology to the consensus sequences of the central repeats
• belongs to the S100-fused protein family
• contains 2 EF-hand domains

Expression

• scattered in normal epidermis
• strong expression in the acrosyringium, the inner hair root sheat & filiform papilli of the tongue
