Function
- multifunctional epidermal matrix protein
- role in cornified cell envelope formation
- reversibly binds Ca+2
- potential substrate of transglutaminase
- some Arg are probably converted to citrullines by peptidylarginine deimidase
- phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR
Structure
- N-terminal domain with significant homology to S100-like Ca+2-binding proteins
- central domain containing a series of short tandem repeats
- two flanking segments with low homology to the consensus sequences of the central repeats
- belongs to the S100-fused protein family
- contains 2 EF-hand domains
Expression
- scattered in normal epidermis
- strong expression in the acrosyringium, the inner hair root sheat & filiform papilli of the tongue
