Function
- filament-forming cytoskeletal GTPase (putative)
- may play a role in cytokinesis
- may play a role in platelet secretion
- septins polymerize into heterooligomeric protein complexes that form filaments, & can associate with cellular membranes, actin filaments & microtubules
- GTPase activity is required for filament formation (putative)
- interacts with CDK14, SEPT4, SEPT5 & SEPT7 (putative)
Structure
belongs to the septin family
Compartment
- cytoplasm, cytoskeleton (putative)
- in platelets, found in areas surrounding alpha-granules
Alternative splicing
Expression
- widely expressed, including in brain, heart & platelets
- most abundant in aorta
- isoform 2 is expressed at low levels in brain regions, including occipital pole, frontal lobe, temporal lobe & putamen
- isoform 1 & 3 are highly expressed in specific brain areas, including occipital pole, frontal lobe, temporal lobe & putamen
- isoform 2 is highly expressed in prostate, testis & ovary
- isoform 1 & isoform 3 are expressed at low levels in prostate, testis & ovary
