Function
- component of the mediator complex
- binds to & activates cyclin-dependent kinase CDK8 that phosphorylates the CTD (C-terminal domain) of the large subunit of RNA polymerase 2 (RNAp II), which may inhibit formation of a transcription initiation complex
- cylin/CDK pair formed by CCNC/CDK8 also associates with the large subunit of RNA polymerase 2
- phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR
Structure
Compartment
nucleus (probable)
Expression
- G1/S-specific cyclin C
- maximum concentrations of cyclin C are observed in late G1
- highest levels in pancreas
- high levels in heart, liver, skeletal muscle & kidney
- low levels in brain
