Function
- converts androstan-3-alpha,17-beta-diol to androsterone in vitro
- role in androgen metabolism during steroidogenesis
- may act by metabolizing compounds that stimulate steroid synthesis &/or by generating metabolites that inhibit it
- no activity toward DHEA, 4-androste-3,17-dione or testosterone
Structure
- belongs to the short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) family
Compartment
Expression
- widely expressed
- highly expressed in retina, pancreas, kidney, liver, lung, adrenal, small intestine, ovary, heart
- expressed in steroidogenic cells including syncytiotrophoblasts, Leydig cells, sebaceous gland & granulosa cells of the dominant follicle & corpus luteum
- in lung, expressed in ciliated epithelium & in acini of adult trachea, in bronchioles, but not in alveoli
- in eye, expressed in nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body > inner nuclear layer of the retina
Pathology
- tumor-associated antigen in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
