Reference interval
- 3-423 IU/mL, age > 17 (median 40 IU/mL), 0-158 IU/mL (VA)
- 1% of maternal value at term
- 1.1-10.2 IU/mL, age = 1 year
- 2.4-34.8 IU/mL. age = 4 years
- 0.3-215 IU/mL, age = 10 years (mean 24 IU/mL)
Increases
- parasitic infections
- allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
- pharmaceutical agents: especially gold compounds
- atopic diseases
- eczema
- asthma (60%)
- hay fever (30%)
- hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome*
- Wiskott Aldrich syndrome
- IgE myeloma
- IgA deficiency
* serum levels of IgE may be determined by polymorphisms in PHF11 gene
Methods
- RIA & PRIST (paper radioimmunosorbant test)
Specimen
- serum
- fresh or store at 4 degrees C for < 72 hours
- stable frozen at -20 degrees C for 6 months
- stable frozen at -70 degrees C indefinitely
Notes
- Measurement of total IgE can be misleading
- Patient with IgE antibodies to specific allergens may have total IgE serum levels within normal limits.
