Function
- stimulates neutrophil & monocyte-mediated inflammatory responses
- triggers release of pro-inflammatory chemokines & cytokines
- increases surface expression of inflammatory cell activation markers
- amplifies inflammatory responses triggered by bacterial & fungal infections
- mediator of septic shock
- interacts with TYROBP
Structure
- glycosylated
- contains 1 Ig-like V-type domain (immunoglobulin-like)
Compartment
- isoform 1: cell membrane
- isoform 2: secreted
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in adult liver, lung, spleen, lymph node, placenta, spinal cord, heart tissues
- expressed in peripheral blood leukocytes > bone marrow
- expressed in normal cells > malignant cells
- expressed with differentiation of monocytes
Pathology
- up-regulated by bacteria, fungi, lipopolysaccharides
- strongly expressed in acute inflammatory lesions caused by bacteria, fungi
