Function
- role in excretion/detoxification of endogenous & exogenous organic anions, especially from brain & kidney
- transports benzylpenicillin, estrone-3-sulfate, cimetidine, fexofenadine 2,4-dichloro-phenoxyacetate, p-amino-hippurate, acyclovir, ochratoxin
Structure
- belongs to the major facilitator superfamily, organic cation transporter family.
Compartment
- basolateral cell membrane
- localizes on the brush border membrane of choroid epithelial cells
- localizes to basolateral membrane of proximal tubular cells
- localizes on abluminal & possibly, luminal membrane of brain capillary endothelial cells
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
expressed in kidney, brain
Pharmacology
- probenecid inhihits OAT3, which is used by viruses including SARS-CoV2, influenza & RSV to transport & package viral proteins in infected cells[2]
More general terms
- transmembrane 11 protein
- major facilitator superfamily (MFS)
- solute carrier family 22 (SLC22, SLC22A)
