CD1D; T-cell surface glycoprotein CD1d; R3G1 (CD1D)

Function

• antigen-presenting protein that binds self & non-self glycolipids & presents them to T-cell receptors on natural killer cells
• heterodimer with B2M (beta-2-microglobulin)
• interacts with MHC II

Structure

contains 1 Ig-like domain (immunoglobulin-like)

Compartment

• cell membrane, endosome membrane, lysosome membrane
• subject to intracellular trafficking between the cell membrane, endosomes & lysosomes
• during protein synthesis & maturation, CD1 family members bind endogenous lipids that are replaced by lipid or glycolipid antigens when the proteins are internalized & pass through endosomes, before trafficking back to the cell surface

Expression

• expressed on cortical thymocytes, on certain T-cell leukemias, & in various other tissues
• expressed in bowel
