Function
- catalyzes transfer of sulfate to position 4 of the N-acetylgalactosamine (galNAc) residue of chondroitin to form chondroitin-4-sufate
- can also sulfate galactose residues in desulfated dermatan sulfate
- preferentially sulfates GlcA->galNAc > IdoA->galNAc
- does not form 4,6-di-O-sulfated galNAc when chondroitin sulfate C is used as an acceptor
3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + chondroitin = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + chondroitin 4'-sulfate
- KM=0.5 uM for PAPS
- KM=2.1 mM for chondroitin
Structure
- N-glycosylation required for activity & stability
- belongs to the sulfotransferase 2 family
Compartment
- Golgi membrane
- single-pass type 2 membrane protein (putative)
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- widely expressed
- highly expressed in spleen, thymus, bone marrow, peripheral blood leukocytes, lymph node, heart, brain, lung & placenta
Pathology
- chromosomal translocation t(12;14)(q23;q32) involving CHST11 with IgH is found in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias
