- universal sulfuryl donor for sulfation events that take place in the Golgi
- activated sulfate donor used by sulfotransferase.
- formed by from ATP & sulfate in a 2 step reaction catalyzed by sulfurylase kinase 1
- adenosine 5' phosphosulfate is an intermediate
- PAPS is transported from cytosol to GOLGI by SLC35B2 & secondarily SLC35B3
