Function

• may hydrolyze collagen type 4, fibronectin, fibrinogen, beta-casein, gelatin type 1 & alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor
• also able to activate progelatinase B

Cofactor:

• binds 1 Zn+2 per subunit (putative)
• Ca+2 (putative)

Structure

• the conserved Cys present in the cysteine-switch motif binds the catalytic Zn+2, thus inhibiting the enzyme
• dissociation of Cys from Zn+2 upon activation- peptide release activates the enzyme
• belongs to the peptidase M10A family

• secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix

• expressed specifically in uterus & placenta

Pathology

• widely expressed in malignant tumors from different sources as well as in diverse tumor cell lines
