Function
- plays a role in lipoprotein assembly & dietary cholesterol absorption
- in addition to its acyltransferase activity, it may act as a ligase
- may provide cholesteryl esters for lipoprotein secretion from hepatocytes & intestinal mucosa
- may form homo- or heterodimers (putative)
acyl-CoA + cholesterol = CoA + cholesterol ester
Structure
- belongs to the membrane-bound acyltransferase family sterol o-acyltransferase subfamily
Compartment
- endoplasmic reticulum membrane; multi-pass membrane protein
