c-jun NH2 terminal kinase, jun kinase (JNK) or stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK)

Function
- subgroup of the MAP kinases, regulated by both Ser/Thr & Tyr phosphorylation
- JNKs bind to the c-Jun transactivation domain & phosphorylate Ser-63, Ser-73 & some secondary sites
- activity is stimulated by UV irradiation
- SAPKs are poorly activated by mitogens, but are the major c-jun NH2 terminal kinase(s) activated in response to cellular stress & TNF-alpha
- SAPKs are also activated in response to sphingomyelinase which elicits a subset of cellular responses to TNF-alpha
