Etiology
- cardiac arrest
- sepsis
- drug intoxication
- renal failure
- respiratory failure
- hepatic failure
- respiratory alkalosis
- metabolic alkalosis
- metabolic acidosis due to inability to metabolize lactate
Laboratory
- arterial blood gas
- pH may be low, high or normal
- plasma lactate if lactic acidosis is suspected
Management
- specific for specific etiology
- bicarbonate for pH of < 7.10
