Indications
Procedure
- infusion of cadaveric donor islets into the portal vein*
- immunosuppression
- more than one transplantation procedure is generally needed
- stem cell transplantation (investigational)
- transplant of chemically-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived islets under the abdominal anterior rectus sheath in a woman with type-1 diabetes[3]
- reprogrammed autologous stem cells transformed into insulin-producing islet cells transplanted into the liver of a man with type-2 diabetes[4]
* Historically, successful in < 10% of patients. Newer protocols may be more successful.
