Introduction
10,881 patients age 50-74 with diastolic BP > 100 mm Hg randomized, open, blinded endpoint study
Treatment groups
Endpoints: stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death
Analysis by intention to treat
Results:
- primary endpoint occurred in 403 patients in diltiazem group and 400 patients in beta-blocker plus diuretic group
- blood pressure lowered 20-23/19 mm Hg in both groups, slighty favoring beta-blocker diuretic group
