Introduction
Restoration of perfusion of the myocardium.
Includes:
Epidemiology
- number of procedures performed is declining[5]
Clinical significance
- overall, CABG may be associated with better long-term survival than coronary angioplasty with stenting.[3]
- CABG vs PCI for left main coronary artery disease[10][12]
- diabetics with multivessel CAD involving the left anterior descending artery should undergo CABG vs PCI.
- everolimus-eluting stent are associated with lower short-term risk for death, stroke, & repeat revascularization vs CABG, but higher rate of late MI & repeat revascularization
- long term risk of death less with stent vs CABG*[7]
- prophylactic revascularization prior to non-cardiac vascular surgery does not improve outcomes[4]
* industry-funded study of 2.9 year duration[7]
Complications
- among older adults CABG vs PCI not different in post-procedural cognitive effects
More general terms
More specific terms
- coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)
