cancer-associated retinopathy syndrome (CAR)

Introduction

autoimmune disease of the retina caused by a tumor in another tissue

Etiology

• small-cell carcinoma of the lung & other malignancies

Pathology

• progressive blinding disease which occurs in the presence of systemic tumor growth

Laboratory

• antibodies against alpha-enolase are present in sera
• anti-Car antibody (anti-recoverin)
• cancer-associated retinopathy Ab in serum
• recoverin IgG Ab in serum/plasma
