CD8 encephalitis

Etiology

• occurs in patients with HIV1 infection who have been taking antiretroviral therapy
  • most likely antiretrovirals associated with CD8 encephalitis are protease inhibitors due to poor CNS penetration

Laboratory

• HIV1 RNA in CSF inappropirately high vs HIV1 RNA in plasma

Management

• glucocorticoids
• change antiretroviral therapy
