Pathology
- sleep fragmentation disrupts sleep architecture, increases fatigue & diminishes inhibition[5]
- sleep fragmentation is associated with worse cognitive impairment at 7 days post ICU discharge after critical illness
Physiology
- sleep fragmentation may share a causal link with lucid dreaming
Comparative biology
- in mice, sleep fragmentation affects cognitive behaviors associated with learning & memory correlated with a decrease in aquaporin-4 (AQP4) which plays a role in the glymphatic system[4]
- in mice, sleep fragmentation increases hippocampal microgliosis & decreases CA1 neuronal activity[3]
- in the hypothalamus sleep fragmentation suppresses neuronal activity in the paraventricular nucleus[3]
- traumatic brain injury & sleep fragmention induce deficits in Schaffer collateral long-term potentiation associated with impaired acquisition of fear conditioning, a result of dorsal hippocampal-dependent cognitive deficits
