Introduction
Extended cycle oral contraceptive. New for 2006. (91 day menstrual cycle)
Indications
Dosage
- 1 tab (Seasonique or LoSeasonique) QD for 84 days
- low dose (10 ug) of ethinyl estradiol for 7 days
- restart cycle
Tabs:
- Seasonique: 150 ug levonorgestrel & 30 ug ethinyl estradiol
- LoSeasonique: 100 ug levonorgestrel & 20 ug ethinyl estradiol
Adverse effects
- may be more spotting between menstrual periods (may be less bleeding relative to Seasonale)
Mechanism of action
- allows women to cycle every 91 days (seasonally)
- contraceptive suppresses endometrial thickening, thus monthly bleeding unnecessary to slough endometrium
