Introduction

Extended cycle oral contraceptive.

Contains: ethinyl estradiol 20 g, drospirenone 3 mg

Indications

• prevention of pregnancy
• premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

Contraindications

(Cautions)

• may be less effective in women > 150 lbs
• patients at risk of hyperkalemia
  • renal insufficiency
  • hepatic insufficiency
  • adrenal insufficiency
• NOT a weight-loss agent

Dosage

• 24 days of ethinyl estradiol 20 ug, 1 mg norethindrone plus 4 days of placebo

Adverse effects

• drospirenone may increase serum K+ levels
  • drospirenone may increase of venous thromboembolism

Drug interactions

• concurrent administration agents increasing serum K+
  • ACE inhibitors
  • angiotensin II receptor antagonists
  • K+ sparing diuretics
  • K+ supplements
  • NSAIDs
  • salt substitutes

• drug interaction(s) of beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists with oral contraceptives
• drug interaction(s) of NSAIDs with oral contraceptive
