- common in:
- 95% of patients with pernicious anemia
- 60% of patients with pernicious anemia also have intrinsic factor-blocking antibodies
- up to 50% of patients atrophic gastritis without pernicious anemia
- 25-30% of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis
- 95% of patients with pernicious anemia
- lower frequency associated with:

- antibodies directed against microsomal components of gastric parietal cells.
- assay detects microsomal & cell-surface parietal cell autoantibodies
