Pathology
- miR-34a nhibits osteoclasts & (to a lesser extent) stimulates osteoblasts[1]
Comparative biology
- human & mouse miR-34a are identical
- mice engineered to overexpress miR-34a
- exhibit high bone mass
- are less likely than control mice to develop osteoporosis after ovariectomy
- have fewer bony metastases after inoculation with a mouse melanoma cell line or a human breast cancer cell line[1]
* a nanoparticle that mimics the action of miR-34a attenuates both osteoporosis & bony metastases in mice[1]
