Sodium Phosphate Parenteral

Indications

• hypophosphatemia, phosphate replacement

Dosage

• dose based on sodium & phosphate levels

Injection:

• 3 mmol of phosphate/mL (15 mL)
• MUST BE DILUTED PRIOR TO ADMINISTRATION

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • edema, hypotension, hyperphosphatemia*, hypocalcemia*, hypernatremia, calcium phosphate precipitation, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, acute renal failure, chronic renal failure*, seizures#

* phosphate toxicity can result in hypocalcemic tetany & chronic renal failure risk of acute phosphate nephropathy is low
